Utah is famous for having the “Greatest Snow on Earth” and on the tail end of a good storm, you can often find a perfect snowflake on the sleeve of your coat while riding the chairlift.

The scientific name for a perfect snowflake is a “Stellar Dendrite”, and Stellar Dendrites are what most people think of when they picture a snowflake. They resemble a star with six arms extending from their center. Their arms and side branches can be fragile.

They are particularly sensitive to heat, and even proximity to a single breath can cause them to melt, deform, or turn instantly into a drop of water.

It takes ALOT of starts to align to capture a photograph of one of these, and this single snowflake is my best image from 20 years of chasing snowflakes around the world.
